MariAnne has been with Bible League for three years, serving as Director of Bible-based Literacy. She crafts the curriculum that helps people learn how to read and write, and discover the hope of Jesus along the way.
Reaching people with God’s Word through literacy brings MariAnne much joy!
One aspect of my role that brings me joy is knowing that, as a team, we can bring the Word of God to places we could never reach on our own. More specifically, in my work, having the opportunity to share the love of the Lord while teaching a life-changing skill brings incredible joy. There is something profoundly moving about seeing a student who thought they would never get the chance to read, be able to sound out words and begin to read on their own. Even more powerful is when they start to read the Bible for themselves and learn more about God through their ability to read. Seeing the happiness on their faces brings a smile to mine as well!
She was able to see those smiling faces in person on her trip to Indonesia.
I had the privilege of going to Indonesia in 2023. This trip was incredibly uplifting as it gave me the opportunity to see Bible League “on the ground.” We went to a wide range of places that were conducting Bible-based literacy classes, including orphanages, Bible schools, churches, seminary student groups, and classes held on the street with nothing but a tarp for their classroom. To see the impact that these literacy classes had on students from such varying backgrounds was both humbling and inspiring for me.
Not only is MariAnne a crucial team member of Bible League, she also has important influence in her local church.
Outside of Bible League, I am deeply involved in my church. My husband is a pastor and, as his wife, I endeavor to support him in his calling. I am also part of the missions team, the refugee outreach ministry, women’s ministry, and the greeting committee. Being a part of the family of God reminds me how the Church is the Body of Christ, and of the crucial role the Church plays in being the hands and feet of the Lord.
Scriptures from Isaiah and Job keep her motivated in doing the Lord’s work.
Don’t worry—I am with you. Don’t be afraid—I am your God. I will make you strong and help you. I will support you with my right hand that brings victory. Isaiah 41:10 ERV
I recite Isaiah 41:10 repeatedly. It reminds me that we are not in this alone, and that the Lord promises to be with us, helping us with His power and strength along the journey. Another verse that I often lean on is Job 42:2, as we are reassured that God is in control of all things and that we can rest in Him.
“I know you can do everything. You make plans, and nothing can change or stop them.” Job 42:2 ERV
