Portrait Of Letty.Letty was the scapegoat in her family. Whenever her siblings would misbehave, she was the one to bear the brunt of the consequences. “They made me pay for things I didn’t steal,” the 53-year-old mother of three recalls with sadness. “Often, they would beat me up for false accusations. My life was marred with misery.”

The continuing physical abuse heavily affected Letty’s health. “I still live in constant pain and cannot regard myself as a healthy person,” she intimates.

Adding to her physical suffering, Letty never learned to read and write, dramatically decreasing her chances of finding a job. Currently, she is a housewife and lives in Ga-Sehlakwane, a rural village in South Africa’s Limpopo Province.

Three years ago, Letty connected with Pastor Hleko, a Bible League-trained minister. He welcomed her to his church, where she soon felt at home. “I responded positively to the Gospel and was thankful to be at a place where Christ was exalted, and the Word was preached in my native language.”

Later, Pastor Hleko encouraged Letty to join a Project Philip Bible study group. Her lack of reading and writing skills were no objection, she notes with gratitude. “The pastor and his wife lovingly accommodated me in the class. I listened as others read, and I answered the questions the pastor asked. The other classmates were loving and patient with me.”

When Letty completed the program, she received a Bible you helped provide. “Every day, one of my children reads a Scripture for me,” she relates. “I enjoy hearing more about Jesus!”

One of the most significant changes in Letty’s life is her discovery of the power of prayer. “I cannot read and write, but the Lord gave me a passion for prayer ministry,” she explains. “Since coming to Christ, I go on my knees and pray. I am able to bear my pains better now.”

Letty’s neighbors have noticed the transformation in her life. They have started asking questions about it. “Their curiosity is an opportunity for me to share Christ’s love with them,” Letty notes. “If I had the chance, I would like to ensure that every member of my community would study Project Philip and receive their own Bibles.”

Through the Bible study, Letty learned about Christ’s love in the group setting. Now, she no longer feels sidelined as an illiterate person. She acknowledges and appreciates your support: “Even though I don’t know you personally, you are always in my prayers. The Lord will reward you for planting the seed of God’s Word in people’s lives!”
